Orchard Labs Community System (OLCS)
The Orchard Labs Community System (OLCS) is a community website system built on top of OpenACS 4.5 an open source website toolkit adapted from the ArsDigita Community System (ACS, now owned by RedHat). It runs on any unix-like operating system, AOLServer 3.x+, and PostgreSQL 7.1.x+. The OLCS provides an integrated forum, news, article, links, and advertising packages. For an example, see vtec.net.

Orchard Labs, Inc. maintains the code publishes it under a GPL license. The code will be available on SourceForge.net shortly. The OLCS is provided as is with no warranties, however, we provide support for the code.
Features
The OLCS is a tightly integrated set of packages which will allow you to start your community website quickly. The forums code is the focal point of the system. The news and articles code utilizes the forums code so that visitors can respond to news items and articles. The forums code allows you do display the message threads in three different views: flat (Ultimate Bulletin Board style), fancy (threaded view with graphics), simple (threaded view with HTML lists). Administrators can force the site to adhere to one type of view or allow visitors to choose their preferred view.

Articles

  • Authors can use the online form to write the article and upload files or they can do a bulk upload from a zip file (or tar.gz file)

  • Page ordering can be changed quickly using the admin interface

Ad Server
  • Admins create rates and ad factors. Advertisers at the same factor level get their ads show in an equal proportion. Advertisers at different factor levels get their ads shown in a proportion equal to the factor, for instance 2x greater.
  • Advertisers can submit multiple campaings. All campaigns from a single advertiser is counted to create verify the parity of the viewings within the rate level and between rate levels.
  • The ad code and data needed to maintain parity between and within the rate levels is stored in memory (nsv arrays) to reduce database load and is saved back to the database every few minutes
  • Advertisers can view their statistics on a yearly, monthly or hourly basis.
  • Admins can view site wide statistics on a yearly, monthly or hourly basis
  • A payment system is not integrated with the ads package, but can be tracked manually using the admin page
